Statement
米粒の輝き、財布の中の硬貨の汚れ、工事現場を覆うシートの青色。神は細部に宿るというが、この世界の本質はどこか遠いところにあるのではなく、そんな誰しものすぐそばにあるのではないだろうか。
「一枚の葉っぱが手に入ったら、宇宙全体が手に入るでしょう」これは、日本画家の安田靫彦が教え子の小倉遊亀に伝えた言葉である。一枚の葉っぱが足下に落ちていたとしても、見ようとしなければそれはただの葉っぱでしかなく、もしくは葉っぱですらない。しかしひとたび目を向ければ、そこには宇宙を見るかのような世界が広がっている。あるいは宇宙全体も、見方やスケールを変えれば一枚の葉っぱのような小さな存在かもしれない。安田靫彦の言葉から、私はそんなミクロとマクロを行き来する感覚を覚えた。
「普通なら何とも感じないようなささいなことが、突然、とてつもなく面白く感じられることがあるんだよ」とは、アンディー・ウォーホルによる言葉である。大量消費される商品広告や消費物を主役とした作品たちは、米粒ひとつに神様を見るような日本的な感覚と、私の中で矛盾することなく結びついた。ありふれた対象が、社会の構造やそれを見つめる人間自体を露わにし、生や死までがフラットにつながっていく。 安田靫彦とアンディー・ウォーホルによる言葉は、日本画とポップアート、あるいは日本とアメリカという異なる地点からのものでありながら重なりをもって響き、作品上で交差する。
米粒や一円硬貨、そんな些細な対象が、日常的な価値観を超え世界の一端に繋がっていくような感覚。それはときに小さな点が世界に広がっていくような開放感であり、ときに世界そのものが小さなドットのひとつになるような閉塞感でもある。ユーモラスで楽観的な期待や願望と、シニカルで絶望にも近い諦念。それを絶えず行き来しながら、すぐそこにある何かを探していく。宇宙の果ては、あなたの手のひらの中にあるのかもしれない。一枚の葉っぱが手に入ったとき、果たしてそこにはなにがあるのだろうか。

It is said that god is in the details: the glistening of a grain of rice, the grime on the coins in your purse, the blue of the tarp that hides a construction site. The essence of this world may not be somewhere out of reach, but intimately closer to us than we think.
“If you own a single leaf, you may own the entire universe” were the words of nihonga artists Yasuda Yukihiko bestowed upon his protégé Ogura Yuki. Even if a single leaf may be lying at your feet, if you don't stop to register it, it is just a leaf, or further not even a leaf. Once you give it a glance, that leaf can show you a world as expansive as the universe. Contrarily, from a different perspective, the universe itself may seem as small as a leaf. From these words of Yasuda Yukihiko, I discovered the sensation of traveling between the microscopic and macroscopic.
Andy Warhol once said “You need to let the little things that would ordinarily bore you suddenly thrill you”.
I personally found that Warhol's works highlighting mass-consumed advertisements and products naturally linked with the Japanese ethos of observing god within a single grain of rice. As everyday commodities reveal the structure of society and the very beings of those who behold, even life and death become linked on an even plain. The words of Yasuda Yukihiko and Andy Warhol, although being from the different standpoints of nihonga and pop art, or Japan and America, both resonate and intersect within my works.
The feeling of little things such as grains of rice and one yen coins transcending their everyday realms and showing us a view of the world can be a revelating sensation, like dots expanding into the universe, but can also feel dismal, as though the world becoming entrapped in a single decimal. As we restlessly sway between humorous expectations and optimism, and cynical, almost desperate resignation, we search for what is right in front of us. Maybe the edges of the universe already lay in your hands. Here I explore what we may actually gain through gaining a single leaf.
